Is your cell phone a permanent appendage?

How often have we been with friends or co-workers who constantly have their phone ringer turned on, sitting face up on a table/desk, and seem unable to devote attention to what's happening in real life (namely your conversation!)? This habit has been starting earlier and earlier in a young person's life, and is almost status quo for adults. Dr. Newport theorizes that this was not the intent of the I-Phone: Steve Jobs took the minimalist view that the phone was to make everyday tasks easier, not overtake all our waking moments.
